Valuable medieval manuscript digitised
A unique illuminated manuscript from the archive of Radley College has been digitised by TownsWeb Archiving. The 236 leaf bound volume can now be read and examined in detail, thanks to work jointly carried out by the staff of Radley College and TownsWeb’s expert digitisation team.
No one knows exactly how the Antiphonal – a music manuscript for use by a choir singing a service – came to be lodged with the famous school in Oxfordshire or found its way there from the Netherlands. The manuscript, on vellum, is written in Latin with Flemish annotations, and with elaborate decoration.
College staff delivered the book to TownsWeb studios and helped with the handling of the valuable and fragile volume during the digitisation process, which employed specialist overhead equipment and book rests. Final page images were supplied in master tiff and surrogate jpg formats on DVD. The whole manuscript is now available to view by scholars and researchers, and sample pages can be seen on the school’s website.
‘This was the second project that TownsWeb Archiving undertook for us and, again, we were very happy with the way in which their team handled it. This was a large and fragile manuscript. The digitisation now allows close study of every aspect of it. This is part of an ongoing digitisation programme, and since we were happy with TownsWeb Archiving’s service we would certainly use them again.’ Clare Sargent, Head of Library & Archives, Radley College
