Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust: Digitise Photographic Collection and Put Online

ARE YOU LOOKING TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR ARCHIVES?

ARE YOU LOOKING TO MAKE YOUR ARCHIVE ACCESSIBLE ONLINE?

Wigan Leisure & Culture TrustWigan Leisure & Culture Trust (WLCT) was formed in 2003. The organisation is a charitable trust working on behalf of Wigan Council to manage and support Leisure and Cultural facilities, initiatives and events for over 300,000 residents across the Wigan Borough.

WLCT put a tender forward to potential suppliers entitled ‘The Digitisation of the Trust’s Photographic Collection and the Setting Up and Management of a Public Website’.

WLCT were looking for a supplier that could:

a) Scan approximately 5,000 photographs in glass plate, original print and 35mm film strip formats.

b) Provide the images to WLCT to a high resolution in master and surrogate formats.

c) Watermark the surrogate copies of each image.

d) Use WLCT exported meta-data from their Adlib system and attach the records to the scanned images.

e) Setup, design and develop a public website to host the digitised collection online. To include a search engine and payment gateway for buying images.

f) Provide a Collections Management System to allow the Trust access and maintain the online content and add further information/images in small quantities.

g) Maintain and host the images online and provide a service to customers buying prints of the collection.

Not only did TownsWeb Archiving scan WLCT’s photographs, but we also created a public front end from which members of the public can search and buy photographs, we provided a CMS solution to allow staff to continue to add to their online collection.

Finally we also handle any customer orders. When an order for a print comes in via the website, TownsWeb Archiving Ltd will print the photograph, despatch it to the customer and then pass any revenue on to WLCT.

We are hoping that that this access and revenue model might suit other organisations looking to make collections available to the public.
