Shepshed Council: Digitise & Transcribe Cemetery Registers and Maps – Onsite

Shepshed CouncilShepshed is located in a pretty area just to the West of Loughborough in North Leicestershire.

The council approached TownsWeb Archiving to ask if we could scan their registers and maps at their offices in Shepshed.  Due to the fact that there were no duplicate copies of these records, they didn’t want to risk sending them away to be scanned.

TownWeb Archiving visited the council and scanned all of their registers and maps within one day.

Back at the TownsWeb Archiving studios the scanned maps were converted to JPEG and TIFF formats in full colour.  The register pages were converted to greyscale.

TownsWeb Archiving then transcribed all of the cemetery records capturing:

  • Cemetery Name
  • Section
  • Plot Number
  • Deceased Forename & Surname
  • Date of Burial

The scanned images and the transcribed records were then linked together integrated in to TownsWeb’s virtual book viewing software before being delivered back to the council on a number of DVD’s.

The virtual book viewing software enables the council to open a register on screen and flick through the pages.  Pages can be printed, faxed and emailed directly from the software.  Furthermore, individual records can be copied and pasted from the pages in to an external application such as Microsoft Word or Outlook – which helps when providing genealogy information.

The virtual book viewing software also enables records to be fully searched.  For example staff can now type ‘Sm*’ and ’195*’ to show all of the pages within the registers which contain a record where the surname begins with ‘Sm’ and the deceased was interred in the 1950′s.
